Free Photo Contest: The Everyman

Free Photo Contest :

The Everyman believes that anyone who has ever taken pictures in their life, has taken good pictures. One of the primary differences between professionals and non-professionals is how reliably they can get the good shot.

Copyright: By entering a photo to the Everyman Contest, you give the contest's sponsor, Troy DeArmitt, permission to post the submission on this website at the contest's conclusion or hang your photo in his home. He will satisfy any matting or framing requirements he deems appropriate in this presentation.
Eligibility: Amateur
Entry deadline: September 1, 2008

because, photography, like any art, is meant to capture a moment, convey a feeling, tell a story, it is erroneous to believe that in order for a photo to be effective or artistic it must have formal composition, ideal lighting or, and most importantly, be taken by a professional.

while i can appreciate the honed prowess of a skilled photographer, i also enjoy the work of amatuer photogs. a great problem though is that adequate forums do not exist to showcase and reward the efforts of these less involved owners of cameras. professional photographers sometimes take bad pictures and occasional photographers sometimes take great pictures. The Everyman contest offers a space to showcase the work of the latter category.

have i mentioned yet that it doesn't cost anything to enter.

or that if your photo finishes in the top three of any of the categories you win cool, hard, american lucre.

i've tried to make this as easy as possible and am open to suggestions on how it could be improved, but truth told, would rather you used the time to send me a picture than your thoughts on how you would run a photo contest if you had a website, were bored and needed things to hang on the walls of your home.

for the true beginnings of the everyman, you can read this.

if you still have questions after that, they may possibly be answered here.

Your Portfolio in Focus (BBC)

Free Photo Contest :
Have you been to an unusual event? Do you want to shed light on a subject or place that you are interested in, or would you just like to show off your best pictures?

Copyright: In contributing to BBC News you agree to grant us a royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to publish and otherwise use the material in any way that we want, and in any media worldwide. It's important to note, however, that you still own the copyright to everything you contribute to BBC News and that if your image and/or video is accepted, we will endeavour to publish your name alongside it on the BBC News website.
Eligibility: Anyone
Entry deadline: Ongoing

Have you been to an unusual event? Do you want to shed light on a subject or place that you are interested in, or would you just like to show off your best pictures?

If so then we want you to send us between eight and 10 photographs with captions for presentation as a gallery on the In Pictures page.

==

Photos:

Ideally, you should aim to take a variety of photographs - it’s a good idea to plan the story before you start. A good first photo would be one that introduces the subject to the readers.

Make sure you take some close-up photos as well as some wider pictures to show the subject’s environment, but remember to include something in the foreground to add impact.

When you take the picture, remember to look up or down to see what is around you. You might get a better shot if you kneel, or find a position to look down from.

The completed photo essay will have no more than 10 photographs, but you can send us more to choose from.

Make sure you have permission from anyone pictured before submitting the photographs.

Words:

Each picture will need a caption.

Who, what, why, where and when is a good place to start when gathering information for the caption, but where possible quotes from those pictured and a description of how you are feeling will help bring the essay to life.

We don’t need many words - no more than 40 per picture.

How to submit a picture

If you think you have an interesting set of photographs, send it to the BBC News website

If you want to e-mail it to us, send it to yourpics@bbc.co.uk

Don’t forget to include your name and some background information and please put “My Portfolio” in the subject heading as this will increase your chances of selection.
